KODEO for VS Code

Your editor.Their browser.One room.

Open a KODEO project in VS Code — straight from KODEO, or in a folder that stays in sync — and edit it live with your team. Their cursors, comments, chat and the project’s Git, where you already work.

Sixty seconds

Install, sign in,you’re in the room.

  1. Install

Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X) → search KODEO → publisher kodeohq → Install. In Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium it comes from Open VSX.

    ext install kodeohq.kodeo
  2. Sign in

KODEO: Sign In, then approve in your browser with your passkey or two-factor. No browser? Sign In with a Code.

    KODEO: Sign In
  3. Open a project

Straight from KODEO (nothing to download), or clone it into a folder that stays in sync.

    KODEO: Open Project…

Two ways to open a project

On your disk,or not at all.

Straight from KODEO

Nothing to download

Open kodeo://acme/storefront and start typing. Files arrive as you open them and are cached by content — even on vscode.dev and github.dev.

  • One request for the whole file tree
  • Saves are version-checked, never overwrites
  • KODEO Search and Go to File built in

A linked folder

Real files, kept in sync

Clone into a folder: files you have open are live, everything else is sent when you save — all or nothing. Your terminal, tests and dev server run privately.

  • The same folder kodeo clone makes
  • Three-way merges, conflicts marked
  • Local runs use no runtime hours

In the room

Everything thebrowser has.

Live editing

Character by character with teammates in the browser or in VS Code — one CRDT underneath, so nobody overwrites anybody, even typing on the same line.

Both directions

Files a teammate creates, renames, deletes or types into in the browser appear in VS Code by themselves — and yours in theirs.

Cursors & follow mode

Everyone’s cursor in their colour; hover one for who, where and whether they’re typing. Follow someone’s file, cursor and scrolling; Esc stops.

Bring everyone here

Send the room to your line with a note — and answer the browser’s summons from VS Code.

Comments & chat

The same threads as the browser in VS Code’s Comments UI (Alt+C on a line); chat in the sidebar or a full tab. Teammates’ messages pop up.

KODEO Assist

Ask anything about KODEO without leaving the editor — answers stream in with the Help articles they come from. It never sees your code.

Notifications

Your KODEO notifications in the sidebar. Send a file from your phone and it pops up the moment you’re back in VS Code.

Checkpoints & trash

Named checkpoints you can restore, and a Trash view with everything deleted in the last 7 days — for everyone in the project.

Undo that’s yours

Ctrl+Z undoes your own edits — never a teammate’s — exactly like the web editor.

Never load-bearing

Connection gone? Solo mode: version-checked saves, nothing lost, and your edits merge back when it returns.

Open in VS Code

From the web editor, a notification or Assist — or kodeo open --vscode. On a phone: send it to your computer.

Search & go to file

KODEO’s own project search and Go to File — Ctrl+Shift+F and Ctrl+P in a kodeo:// window, where VS Code’s can’t reach.

Source Control

The project’s Git,all of it.

  • Start or bring one in

Initialize Repository for the whole project, clone any public GitHub repository by link, or link an existing one.

  • Per-person staging

What you stage is yours; teammates’ staging shows as a note. Commit with co-authors from the room — live files are settled first.

  • History & blame

KODEO History in Source Control — commits, their files and diffs, one file’s history — and who changed the line you’re on.

  • Branches, merges, stashes, tags

Switch (for everyone, your changes parked), create, rename, delete; merge with conflicts in the files; stash, pop, tag.

  • GitHub, from the server

Push, pull, publish, pull requests and CI checks — run by KODEO with your GitHub connection. The token never reaches VS Code.

  • Safety nets

The secret scan and sensitive paths ask first; discarded work goes to the trash; restore any file to any commit.

Keyboard

The shortcutsyou already know.

  • AltCComment on this line
  • Ctrl⇧JPeople & chat
  • AltGSource Control
  • CtrlPGo to file (kodeo://)
  • Ctrl⇧FSearch the project
  • CtrlZUndo — only yours
  • EscStop following
  • Alt/Every KODEO shortcut

Only in KODEO windows — the rest of VS Code keeps its own keys. On a Mac, Ctrl is ⌘.

Questions

Asked, andanswered plainly.

Do my teammates need the extension?
No. They keep working in the browser; you show up in the same room with a “VS Code” badge. Uninstalling it changes nothing for anyone else.
Can I run my project?
In a linked folder, yes — npm run dev, tests and builds in VS Code’s terminal are yours: private, and they use no runtime hours. KODEO’s shared Run (the one teammates can watch) stays in the browser; “Run in KODEO” opens it.
Does it work in Cursor and Windsurf?
Yes. They install extensions from Open VSX, where KODEO is published too (publisher kodeohq). So are VSCodium and — in the browser — vscode.dev and github.dev.
What if the live connection drops?
KODEO switches to Solo mode, like the web editor: saves are version-checked and nothing you type is lost. When the connection returns, your edits merge into the room.
Does it work offline?
In a linked folder, yes: you edit, save and run everything locally, and when you’re back online the extension catches up both ways (three-way merges, conflicts marked). Opening a project straight from KODEO, live editing, chat, Assist and Git need the connection.
Does KODEO Assist read my code?
No. Assist in VS Code is told which editor you’re in, whether you’re live and your role — state words only, checked on the server. With your OK it can read your plan and settings; never files, errors or terminal output.
Where do “Open in VS Code” links go?
You choose, in KODEO under Settings → Local access → Open code links in: VS Code, Insiders, Cursor, Windsurf, VSCodium, vscode.dev or the browser. Notifications, summons and Assist’s links follow it.
How do I sign out?
KODEO: Sign Out in the Command Palette, or end it in KODEO under Settings → Local access. A password change, an email change or “This wasn’t me” ends it too.
